What happens during your gas check

Our Gas Safe engineer will:

  • service all gas appliances and systems we installed or own
  • check your boiler
  • test your carbon monoxide (CO) detector

You are responsible for the safety and condition of any gas appliances that belong to you.

After the check, we’ll send you a copy of your gas safety certificate in the post.

What to expect during your gas safety check

How long it takes

The check usually takes between 45 and 90 minutes.

How to prepare

Before your appointment, please:

  • make sure you have enough credit on your gas and electric prepayment meters, if you have them
  • clear space around your boiler and any gas appliances
  • move any furniture or belongings that might be in the way

This helps our engineer work safely and complete the visit on time.

Why gas safety checks matter

Badly fitted or poorly maintained gas appliances can cause:

  • gas leaks
  • fires or explosions
  • carbon monoxide poisoning

Carbon monoxide is extremely dangerous. You can’t see it, taste it or smell it. Every year, around 15 people die from carbon monoxide poisoning caused by unsafe gas appliances and flues.

That’s why your annual check is so important.

If you smell gas

If you think you have a gas leak:

  • leave your home immediately
  • call the National Gas Emergency number on 0800 111 999
  • if it’s safe to do so, turn off your gas supply

Do not smoke.
Do not use electrical switches.
Do not use naked flames.

If your carbon monoxide detector or smoke alarm isn’t working properly, call us straight away on 0300 555 6666 or report it through Manage My Home online.
