Electrical safety checks
We carry out an electrical safety check in your home every few years to make sure everything is safe and working properly.
We used to complete these checks every 10 years. We’re now aiming to reduce this to every five years so we can keep your home even safer.
This is a legal requirement and part of your tenancy agreement. You must allow us access to carry out this important check.
What happens during your electrical check
Our electrician will:
- check your fuse board
- inspect sockets, switches and lighting
- test circuits to make sure they are safe
- check your smoke detectors are present and working
We carry out visual inspections and testing to identify any damage or wear. We may unscrew some switches to check the wiring, but this shouldn’t cause any damage.
If we find anything that puts you in immediate danger, we’ll repair it to make your home safe.

What to expect during your gas safety check
How long it takes
The check usually takes three to four hours.
An adult must be present at the start of the appointment, but you can go about your normal routine while we work. We’ll do our best to stay out of your way.
If we are given easy access, we will:
provide you with an energy-saving lightbulb
fit a socket with a USB port
Will it be messy or disruptive?
No. We won’t be drilling into walls or doing anything that affects your décor. The check involves testing and inspection rather than major works.
How to prepare
Before your appointment, please:
- move furniture away from sockets and switches
- make sure you have enough credit on your prepayment meter, if you have one
This helps us complete the check quickly and safely.
Why electrical safety checks matter
Around 20,000 homes in the UK are affected by electrical fires every year.
Most are caused by faulty electrical products or wiring. Many of these incidents could be prevented through regular inspection and maintenance.
Your safety check helps protect you, your family and your home.
